Office NBN Fibre Upgrade
Our Office is Upgrading our NBN from FTTN to FTTP and bellow is info how things went.
(Copper to Fibre)
THE REASON (for the upgrade).
FTTN (Fibre to the node) is using the old copper wire that was installed over 40 years ago in the office area by Telstra, The old exchange from the office is only 500m from there but cable length is 1000m
When NBN was installed they cut the cable length to 500m to the FTTN but it is only 100M from the Office (Yes you read that right).
Then the problem, it is when NBN Tech's touch the pits in the area (with the copper wires), they do not reinstall the sealed lid and so rain has entered the wires and this has caused the degrade of the wire.
The 2 wires out side of the joint box is the office wires, connected to the feed in.
And so now every time the tech touches the wires they brake our office connection to NBN.
The problem is if we don't see them brake it then it could take a week to get another tech in to fix the brake caused by the other.
This is why the change to FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) as they have to fix it within 24hr under the Plan we have with NBN.
FTTP also has much better tracking tools for when a problem might happen and this makes it quicker to fix this.
Now the start of the switchover and all fun it was.

Application to upgrade the office from FTTN to FTTP has been applied for.
With our Upstream link provider this was easy and quick to apply for with the ISP.
Now we have to wait for a day for NBN tech's come and look at the install and to give us a install date.
11-02-25
We received a notification with a NBN visit date of the 18th Feb 2025, the worst is its a 4hr window (8am to 12pm).
18-02-25
Well today did not go so well.
I got a Message at 10:50 that a NBN tech is on there way, they turned up at 11:50 (10 min left in the 4hr window).
They was a contractor not NBN, he sat in his car for 7 min before coming to the door (11:57), all while still on the phone.
Thats right, he could not get off the phone for the hole time he was here, he should also realise that some people can understand there native language too.
For 90% of the time he was on the call, it was on hands free, no head set too (so you could not miss what was being said).
But then the so call install.
Thats right, the requested site visit first never happen, they was here to install.
As this area is aerial copper the fibre was to be to be too, and so at first they did not like where the indoor unit was to go as its not where the copper comes to on the place, but they had to as it was within the requirements of NBN.
I had also warned them about the conduct from the poll to the pit is not connected and size difference (I had seen it when the pole was replaced, then again when NBN replaced the pits),
They looked at it about 2min and told me this was in the too hard bin for them and will have to get other techs out to do this.
Its more that he doesn't want to dig, tho he did dig a touch at the pole to see how the cover was there (as in the 1st photo, next is how close to the pole it is 2')
I requested that they get the job done on the day, since he has already started and I had to be here for them in the first place (And this is all BS on there side)
He installed the indoor NBN unit and outdoor junction box, but the way he did the indoor was not right.
He drilled through the brick then the plaster but expanded the hole to 60 x 60mm
He then just placed the nbn indoor unit over the hole.
The problem is, now if a mouse got in then they have full access to the nbn box and indoors (As in the photo)
My fist can almost go in that hole, I will re-cover the hole after the install is finished and live to keep everything out.
NBN NTD Box Installed.
The Outside box looks like this for now.
Now we have to wait for the next lot to come and dig to fix the pipe to the pole.
We was quoted 2 weeks but could be any day too, Tho they are to call first (Thats what the tech had said).
Current tech left at 12:50.
Called the ISP after 3 hr and after they called NBN I was told at least 2 days for NBN to look at the report then assign someone to the job, the ISP was quoted up to a month min and they as with me was not happy.
27-02-25
Well today was fun, at 11:30 NBN (Labelled) bucket truck turned up.
I asked them why they was here, as there was no call as required, it was lucky I was here at the time (they state NBN didn't state a call was requested, tho its on the order).
Both of then was great to deal with.
Then the fun.
1st they was not here to dig as that would require another person tho I was told by the first person the next person to ever come was the one to dig and then install the fibre.
I then told them about the pit and they was surprised it was not connected to the conduit on the pole.
Then the next problem, there is no fibre connection in the pit, they had to run from the next pit to my one then up the pole then to my building, and this was not going to happen too.
The wires going up is the pit with the joiners.
They found out the conduct between pits is full of mud, and so could not run it that way so the next was in the air.
They was lucky the junction pit conduct (tho small) was connected to the pole and able to have a fibre pushed up it.
The fibre going across is my one
Then the tree next to that pole made it fun to run to the next pole without going through the tree, but they got it done.
The fibre was then connected to the pole close to the office and then to the office.
Tho I had installed a conduit from the outside box to where I wanted the cable to connect as the first person's way to connect would have to be replaced within a few months as it would not hold for long on the building.
They had just the right length of cable as the next length was from a role
After the install I had -20db at the junction box to the exchange.
There is info on the white plate, just covered for public view.
Then the NTD optic light (Indoor unit) would not turn green,
Then came the funny part as the moment the tech took off his shoes to come in it started to work.
But still no connection to the ISP.
All of the NBN was completed and they left at 1300.
I made a call soon after to the ISP and they can see all the parts but are sure for some reason the port I am connected too has not been assigned to my connection and so now have to wait for NBN to do some internal work.
Connection to the internet via this came up at 2100, now I have to get the old IP's moved to the new service.
Tho the ISP had a update on there end at 1430 that all was live but no connection till 2100.
28-02-25
Well we are online.
Lights are (L-R), 1. Power Green, 2. Optical Green, 4. UNI-D1 Orange 1GB, all others off.
After a call to the upstream we got the IP's that was assigned to the FTTN moved to the Fibre.
It took some time and Fault finding as the office had been placed of the wrong ISP POI for some reason.
Once moved all came up and now higher download and upload speeds for the office.
The provider and I agreed that we want a report from NBN as this was a bit crazy it was going to need 3 turn outs (As such).
And also why none of the steps was followed (as required by NBN own paperwork).
As I have seen the steps are meant to be,
1. Book in for the upgrade,
2, Time booked in for NBN SV,
3, Site visit (To make sure of things and make a time for the install),
4. Install Fibre and NBN equipment,
5. If part of 4 could not be completed, new booking must be made to complete,
6. (Like 5.) Return at the booked in time and complete the install.
And during all of this "keep the owner up to date"

Update on inside NBN Install (Clean up)
Well as you have read above when the Tech installed the NBN indoor box he left huge hole for no reason, we have fixed it
We had moved the NBN box up above the hole and cover the hole.
Yes there is a big crack in the plaster, this is fixed and was caused by no joining tape when building was made and so moved a touch (Before NBN)
The hole box was moved up a set of holes, as this made it easier to be able to see if there is a problem with NBN and fix it quicker.
Then we used a over the counter resist wall cover to allow the fibre to come through, we only needed to cut bolt holes in the plaster as that's how big the hole was.
With the cover on, The install looks so much better now.
If Any More Info We Will Up Date This Page But From Now We Are Up On Fibre...
